Retail Shoe Operation

Twenty-five people from 14 villages in Honduras have an opportunity to earn an income by meeting a market need. Just Hope is providing a way for people to buy shoes, which are very popular in Honduras, at wholesale prices. We also provide best practices for sales and financial management as they grow this venture.

The sellers will buy the shoes in small batches at wholesale prices, then sell them at retail prices in neighboring villages, keeping and investing the profit. This micro-economic venture is based on a hub-and-spoke model, where entrepreneurs purchase the shoes in Progreso and fan out to small markets in rural areas outside the city, where shoes of all types and sizes are in high demand.

Preparing for the future

Raul anticipates being able to manage the Survival Skills ministry and retail shoe operation on his own at the beginning of 2017. We pray for him God’s grace and blessings as he continues to serve young men in his community and divert them from poverty.

Raul Plans for the Future

Raul is in the process of setting up his own nonprofit foundation for the program. He is eager to make his ministry as sustainable as possible through the shoe business, and credits Just Hope for giving him this vision and opportunity. He continues to prepare the financing for the second container of shoes, and we may make a site visit there soon to provide business mentoring.

Planning for Sustainability

Raul is almost out of shoes and plans to liquidate the remaining shoes to finance another container of shoes, which he expects to receive in about three months. For the most part, he is operating independently of Just Hope, and he reports that profits from the second container should have him in position to fully fund the Survival Skills ministry on his own beginning in January 2017.

Shoe Retail Store Opens

The sales group strategy we originally envisioned for the shoe retail operation has not panned out, so Raul and the Survival Skills boys have opened a “store” right in the storage warehouse. As the shoes sell, more shoes are unboxed and organized onto racks. Everyone is learning a great deal about business and the world of retail!
