June Project Roundup
June 27, 2016
Great things are happening at our project sites through the efforts of the people we serve and our local team members. It is always a privilege to bring you a report of activities and the results we are seeing. Thank you for your support of this work as we seek to make an impact that lasts!
Ghana
Just Hope Ghana is now serving 20 active savings groups (374 people!) who are enjoying the benefits of financial services and community trust. Track the growth of our savings groups in Ghana…
We worked with Mankrado Ahfia, chief of the Akwakupom village, and one of our savings groups to plant a seventh external agriculture demonstration site. Read more about our agriculture efforts in Ghana to see why this is encouraging…
Bauya, Sierra Leone
Sullay, Joe and Jenneh have now trained approximately 70 people in five communities in sustainable conservation agriculture. To date, there are approximately 35 external demo sites in and around Bauya that have “sprouted” from the eight demonstration sites we started.
The number of savings groups is holding steady, with further growth inhibited by farmers needing to work hard during the rainy season and spend every dry hour tending to their crops.

Ibrahim Siaka, the farmer who showed enormous initiative by planting the crowns of the rotten pineapples from Just Hope’s harvest last year, is now preparing additional land to plant suckers he and the others will harvest from our original plants. Dauda Koroma has fully planted his palm farm, and Musa Macauley and Abu Bangura have finished pegging their fields in preparation for planting palm.

Lunsar, Sierra Leone
The official count of external demonstration sites that have been planted since our initial training in March is 93 plots in 15 villages! Shanty and John have identified a new variety of bean to replant that is preferred by locals. They now see that any legume will work to fix nitrogen, and the variety is up to them.
Acquiring high quality seeds can be an issue. See Shanty’s outstanding idea to address this challenge…
Sullay and Joe, our team in Bauya, have agreed to serve as mentors to Shanty and John in Lunsar regarding their savings group methods. Read more about the progress in Lunsar…
Togo
Jesse Shanks facilitated a sustainable conservation agriculture demonstration in the village of Kante earlier this month. He trained 27 farmers, who represented 11 villages. See photos and learn more about how the training went…
